Optometry / Optical Device Engineering
The degree is designed in cooperation with the opticians' and optometrists' guild of the state of Brandenburg in Rathenow. It combines medically influenced optics with engineering knowledge about the workings, design, construction, and operation of modern medical devices.
These days there is a large range of visual tasks for which an equally broad range of highly developed technical instruments provide visual aid. The selection of the correct visual aid
requires detailed knowledge of the human visual system, the specific properties of visual aids and the comprehension of the precise functionality needed for examination instruments. These precisely exciting, varied and mutually influencing topics, are combined in our bachelor programme Optometry and Optical Device Engineering.
Our dual programme offers the opportunity to obtain two degrees: a Bachelor of Engineering and a German “Augenoptiker-Meister” or “Optometrist (HWK)“ degree. Simply contact the student advisory service for further information. After four semesters of learning the essentials, students can specialise in the areas of Optometry or Optical Device Engineering by choosing elective modules. You have the option to learn more about optometry, eye diseases and their management as well as the screening methods used in these areas or more about the construction and functionality of optical devices, light sources, measurement technologies and programming.
Small groups in every period of your studies guarantee an optimal learning experience. Many exercises and laboratories accompanying the lectures ensure the very important practical relevance. In the external industrial placement during the 5th semester, more learned content is consolidated across disciplines and initial contacts with companies are established.
